Together the two medications nearly completely deprive the cancer of androgens, causing it to slow, stop, or even reverse its size.

Flutamide is not for everyone, unfortunately. Patients may require modified doses or be unable to take it at all if they:

• Smoke
• Have liver impairment
• Have hemoglobin M deficiency
• Have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

Other medications may or may not be given in these instances.

Note that flutamide is known to cause birth defects. Men taking the medication should use a condom if having intercourse with a pregnant woman; women who are pregnant should not buy flutamide at all. Managing Prostate Cancer

During the first few months of treatment regular doctor checkups---usually once per month---will be scheduled to monitor the medication and any developing side effects. Liver function is of particular concern; though rare, liver damage does occasionally happen. Warning signs include:

• Severe nausea or vomiting
• Severe diarrhea
• Yellowing of skin or eyes
• Appetite loss
• Abdominal pain, which may radiate to the back
• Flu-like symptoms

Unfortunately men will likely experience some female characteristics and sexual dysfunction while taking flutamide; breasts may grow, there may be discharge from the nipples, loss of libido, and so forth. All of these effects will largely reverse when treatment ends.

Off-Label Uses

Women who have hypergonadism and men who wish to develop female characteristics also sometimes buy flutamide. Dosage and duration of treatment can vary widely, and are best determined by a doctor who can take into account personal variables.

Treatment typically runs from 125 to 500 mg per day, divided into two or three daily doses when possible. Most patients are started with the lower, 125 mg dose for a couple of months, increased only if needed. Should treatment end, characteristics will likely be lost to some extent.
