Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Flutamide is an anti-androgen used to treat prostate cancer, particularly when the cancer has begun to spread. The medication comes in tablets and is typically taken three times per day for several months to years.
Patients typically buy flutamide under the brand name Eulexin, though the product is widely available as a generic and known by a wide range of generic names.
This product should not be used on patients under 18 years of age without explicit doctor instruction and supervision.
How Flutamide Works
Flutamide is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen (NSAA). In men, testosterone and its metabolite dihydrotestosterone are major androgens, and they very often provide the fuel needed for prostate cancer to grow and thrive. NSAAs interact with androgen receptors, thus denying it substantial amounts of androgens.
A luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) is usually administered along with flutamide in prostate cancer. LHRH medications, typically administered by a doctor either as an implant or injections, tell the body to stop producing androgens. Together the two medications nearly completely deprive the cancer of androgens, causing it to slow, stop, or even reverse its size.
Flutamide is not for everyone, unfortunately. Patients may require modified doses or be unable to take it at all if they:
Much more rarely patients buy flutamide for other purposes; to treat male-pattern baldness, hypergonadism in women (in which male characteristics develop, sometimes to excess), or in men who wish to develop female characteristics like breasts, higher-pitched voice, and so forth. Other medications may or may not be given in these instances.
Note that flutamide is known to cause birth defects. Men taking the medication should use a condom if having intercourse with a pregnant woman; women who are pregnant should not buy flutamide at all. Women of childbearing age should use a reliable form of birth control for the duration of treatment.
Managing Prostate Cancer
Cancer is a very complicated topic and medications are highly individualized for each particular patient. Information on this page is a rough guideline at best; doctor instructions may vary considerably and should be followed closely.
The standard dose of flutamide for prostate cancer is:
Again, doctor instructions may vary, particularly if an LHRH is also being given.
Duration of treatment ranges from several months to several years. During the first few months of treatment regular doctor checkups---usually once per month---will be scheduled to monitor the medication and any developing side effects. Liver function is of particular concern; though rare, liver damage does occasionally happen. Warning signs include:
Unfortunately men will likely experience some female characteristics and sexual dysfunction while taking flutamide; breasts may grow, there may be discharge from the nipples, loss of libido, and so forth. All of these effects will largely reverse when treatment ends.
Off-Label Uses
Women who have hypergonadism and men who wish to develop female characteristics also sometimes buy flutamide. Dosage and duration of treatment can vary widely, and are best determined by a doctor who can take into account personal variables.
Treatment typically runs from 125 to 500 mg per day, divided into two or three daily doses when possible. Most patients are started with the lower, 125 mg dose for a couple of months, increased only if needed. Should treatment end, characteristics will likely be lost to some extent.
